Colchicine increases the drowsiness associated with medications such as strong pain killers, antidepressants, antihistamines and major tranquillisers. It may also lower the effect of antihypertensive medications.

Use of Colgout (colchicine)

Colgout (colchicine) tablets contain 500 mcg colchicine.
Adult dose: initially, 2 tablets then 1 tablet every 2 to 3 hours until relief; maximum dose is 16 tablets (8 mg) daily.
Take with a meal or milk and drink at least 2 litres of water per day.

Dermatological: mild skin rash, itching, hives.
Gastrointestinal: diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting.
General: fever.
Diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting are dose-related adverse side effects of Colgout (colchicine) common 1 to 2 hours after commencing medication. Treatment should be stopped as soon as these appear.
Your doctor can adjust the dose of Colgout (colchicine) to achieve pain relief prior to onset of these adverse effects.

Major side effects of Colgout (colchicine)

Serious side effects of Colgout (colchicine) require immediate medical attention.

Gastrointestinal: bloody diarrhoea, severe cramps, vomiting.
General: allergic reaction, excess bleeding, mouth ulcers, easy bruising, persistent infections.
Long term therapy may cause hair loss, muscle damage and weakness, pins and needles in hands and feet, and reduced absorption of fats and fat soluble vitamins. Generally, these effects are reversible on ceasing treatment.

Other side effects of Colgout (colchicine) not listed above may also occur in some patients. If you notice any other effects, check with your doctor.
